Hotels located in business districts usually are nothing special. However, the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa proved this thesis wrong and makes very good appearance in our hotel review. With modern rooms, an amazing breakfast on the executive lounge and a lovely spa in the basement, the Porto Palácio Hotel in the third biggest city of Portugal is really worth the money!
When we arrived at the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa, it was already very late in the evening. Due to that, the area where the hotel is located looked a little bad. However, at daytime our impression of the area got better.
Anyway, the location is not very good when you are planning to visit the touristic sights of Porto. The old town is half an hour away by feet.
Also, only few restaurants may be found around the Porto Palácio. Anyway, the hotel itself is very good and the price is usually very fair.
To start this hotel review, we are likely to focus on the rooms of the Porto Palácio Hotel first.
As the hotel is very tall (for Portuguese standards), the higher room categories offer stunning views of Porto.
If you are lucky enough, you may also see the Atlantic Ocean that is located around five kilometers away from the hotel. However, standard rooms are located on the lower floors, though not offering as good views as deluxe rooms.
Our room, a Deluxe Suite, was spacious enough but not very large compared to suites in other luxury hotels. What makes the rooms very good in my opinion is the modern and stylish furniture that makes staying in the room very comfortable.
The bathrooms are a little small, but offer all the amenities you may expect of a luxury hotel. All in all, the rooms at the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa are absolutely recommendable!
A very interesting point in this hotel review of the Porto Palácio is the breakfast. As we had the pleasure to stay on the Deluxe Floor, we had the choice between two different types of breakfast.
You may either opt for the buffet breakfast that is served in the basement or for the à la carte breakfast that is served on the rooftop. On the first day, we decided to try the buffet. Sadly, this one is weak and offers no good choice.
Hot drinks and egg dishes are served by order, but it takes way too long that they’ll reach the table. Moreover, the atmosphere in the basement is horrible. The breakfast on the second day, served on the rooftop, was way better.
The views of the city are amazing and the service was great. Every dish is brought to the table and we were able to order everything without an extra charge. In my opinion, one of the best à la carte breakfasts I ever had.
So be sure to book a Deluxe Room or a Deluxe Suite at the Porto Palácio – it’s absolutely worth it.
It’s kind of weird that this review of the Porto Palácio always features one strong and one weak point. Guests of the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa got 90 minutes of included access into an old and boring Spa that is also accessed by several members of the fitness club.
The gym is located in the basement as well, though not offering any daylight. The machines are old, but the choice of machines is very good. However, it is kind of sad that there is no bottled water offered for hotel guests. Enough about the weak Spa and fitness area. As a member of Leaders Club, I had the pleasure to be invited to try the Wellness & Beauty Lab of the Porto Palácio for 90 minutes on one day.
Usually, this area is only accessible by paying an extra fee. However, this may be worth it. The spa that is also located in the basement got a great atmosphere and got many nice facilities like a pool, hot chairs, a Jacuzzi and a steam bath.
Even though we liked our time at the Spa, we wouldn’t return if we had to pay a fee for that, because we’ve experienced better Spa areas for free in the past.
The conclusion of a hotel review is the most important part for most of our readers. In the case of the Porto Palácio, we can safely say that we would recommend the hotel. As the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa can be booked for rates as low as 80 Euro (~85 US-Dollar) a night on some dates, it offers a great value for the money.
We would recommend to opt for a Deluxe Room to have a nicer view and enjoy the amazing à la carte breakfast on the rooftop. The food offered at the hotel is good as well. As we were a little ill in Porto, we didn’t have the pleasure to try it ourselves. Yet, our family did and they told us that is was satisfying.
Overall, the Porto Palácio definitely deserves five stars. It may not be the best hotel in Porto, yet it is unquestionably the luxury hotel with the best value for the money!
