The Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa is one of the few Hilton hotels in Europe that combines leisure with business. Located just a few kilometers outside the city center of Helsinki, the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa got a pool and a sauna – something only luxury hotels in Helsinki offer. Moreover, the amazing view in the sea wing is worth a mention. Our hotel review of a place with a rich history.
When it comes to history and a great time many years ago, Hilton hotels usually don’t hit the point. Many hotels were newly built in the last decades, others were overtaken, but didn’t have much important in the past. Due to that, we are especially happy to write a hotel review about the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa.
The hotel handled large conventions in the past. From political meetings with Soviet leaders to conventions around the Olympic games in Helsinki: The Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa has been a really special place in the past.
However, it is way less shining today. The facilities are old and only few parts are renovated.
There are many positive points to mention in this hotel review, yet there are some weaknesses as well.
Something that makes our hotel review positive is the fact that the view out of our room was absolutely amazing. Right on a large lake without any buildings or streets in between – one of the best views ever and fair 10 stars for sure.
The room we got at the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa itself was nothing fancy, but modern enough to be comfortable. It was a little small, yet offering a seating area with the great view of the lake and a large bed. There was also some space for working and a therapy lamp that’s helpful against nightlight depression.
The bathroom at the Hilton Kalastajatorppa was decent compared to other Hilton hotels we wrote reviews about yet. Bathtub, shower, sink and toilette – everything you need, but nothing to write home about.
Due to the view, the Deluxe Rooms of the Hilton Kalastajatorppa are definitely recommendable. In fact, the view is the by far most positive point to mention in this hotel review.
To get further into details of this hotel review of the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa, it is important to have a look at the leisure facilities. As the hotel is combining luxury with business, the Spa facilities have to be something very good.
In fact, they are not. Even though the Hilton Kalastajatorppa got public and private saunas, relaxation areas and a pool, the area just isn’t any cozy. It’s good enough to enjoy some time in the sauna and a swim in the pool, but it’s absolutely no space where you want to stay for a longer time.
The gym is kind of similar with having it all: Good and modern machines, a wide variety of options for strength training, towels and water. However, there are only small windows, making the atmosphere kind of depressing.
Kind of sad as the potential of the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa is so good in regards of amazing views and cozy atmosphere.
That night, we skipped dinner in the main restaurant of the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa. That one has a great view, so we’d definitely take a shot for our next hotel review.
However, the breakfast restaurant, not located in the Seaside Wing, does not have any view at all. Attached to the lobby, there are not even any windows. Another thing I can’t understand. The Hilton Kalastajatorppa should definitely serve breakfast in the restaurant in the Seaside Wing.
That would crucially change many hotel reviews. However, the quality of the food offered and the level of service at breakfast were great. We especially liked the nice presentation and the large choice. Orange juice was freshly squeezed, coffee was very good. Summed up, the best breakfast we had at a Hilton hotel so far.
Even though the best years of the Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa are over (it got refurnished after being a Scandic Hotel for years, but many things are still very old), I’d recommend to have a shot if you get a good price.
The furniture is only a little worn out and the views are still something other hotels can just dream of. The breakfast is great. However, the location of the breakfast restaurant should be changed. The staff was helpful and friendly, yet a little distant. What we didn’t like was the Spa that was just not any inviting and crucially missed coziness.
The traffic connection to the city (there is a tram line nearby) is good, but if you are in Helsinki for business, there may be better choices if you don’t like to lose much time for transportation every day. However, I liked the location for running and just strolling around as the nature in the area is beautiful. All in all, we’d come back as the value for the money is good and there are only few good hotels in Helsinki.
