Hotel Preview: Pousada do Porto

Porto in the North of Portugal is getting more and more important as a touristic destination. The Pousada do Porto that opened just a few months ago may especially attract travelers looking for a luxurious accommodation. While there are many five star hotels in Porto, not a single one is as unique as the Pousada do Porto located right at the Douro.

When we visited Porto and stayed at the Porto Palacio Congress Congress Hotel & Spa, we decided to also check out the Pousada do Porto. Even though they were fully booked and we had no chance to stay there, we at least visited all the facilities of the hotel.

As most of the Pousadas in Portugal, also the Pousada do Porto is a very special luxury hotel. It’s not like the luxury hotel in Porto we reviewed, it’s more like a very unique place with a very intimate atmosphere.

Stunning views of the Douro at the Pousada do Porto

What makes the Pousada do Porto special are the two buildings that house the hotel. The Freixo Palace, housing the public areas and restaurants, was built in 1742 and is a national heritage.

The building housing the rooms once was a fabric and offers a very special feeling as well. However, there are also some disadvantages that occur from the rich past of the hotel. While all 87 rooms are very modern, the size of the rooms may shock one or another traveler.

Standard Rooms only offer 22 square meters and Superior Rooms come with 24 square meters. Even the suites of the hotel are not very spacious, so that is a fact to be aware of. However, the views of the rooms of the river side are absolutely amazing and may equalize the missing size.

Another positive fact is the modern and luxurious interior that guests will find in each and every room.

Regional cuisine in a building with history

The Pousada do Porto got a really nice boutique atmosphere. Unlike other luxury hotels in Porto, the Pousada has just a single restaurant.

This one is focusing on regional cuisine, making it easy to indulge the Portuguese cuisine in a place with history. As the restaurant is located in the more than 250 years old Freixo Palace, the atmosphere is absolutely unique.

Judging from all the delights we enjoyed in the also Portuguese restaurant of the Pousada de Cascais, it’s safe to say that every guest will love the cuisine of the restaurant at the Pousada do Porto. For a less formal dinner, guests of the hotel may also order room service.

Feeling like making holidays in the city

Especially the atmosphere at the Pousada do Porto and the great delights in the restaurant may be reasons for why guests choose to stay at the hotel.

Outdoor Pool (Image Source: Pousada do Porto / pousadas.pt)

Like no other hotel in Porto, the Pousada do Porto combines a city hotel with the benefits of a holiday resort. The indoor pool is heated and available in all seasons. The outdoor pool is ideal for a swim in summer and is also offering great views of the Douro.

Not very pricey and yet unique

Usually, the excellent hotels we write about in our hotel preview section come with a hefty price tag. The Pousada do Porto, however, does not. Even though it is not the cheapest luxury hotel in Porto, it is not way more expensive than many others. Especially hotels in the city center tend to be way more expensive than the Pousada do Porto.
