Hotel Review: Grand Hotel Heiligendamm
Sometimes holidays are deeply needed. On Valentine’s Day, we decided that it was the right time to spend some nights at a holiday retreat. The Grand Hotel Heiligendamm, located right at the Baltic Sea, was the perfect choice for that matter. Even though the weather was just so-so, the luxury hotel in the north of Berlin satisfied us to the utmost.
We love city trips and we love exploring new places. However, we also opt for a holiday retreat from time to time.
On Valentine’s Day, we decided to spend a weekend right on the Baltic Sea at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm, one of the few luxury holiday hotels in the North-East of Germany.
- Classification: Five Star
- Room Category: Classic Room with Sea View
- Month of Stay: March
The member of The Leading Hotels of the World has a great location and was on our list for a hotel review for a long time.
Around 30 minutes away from Rostock, in the little town Heiligendamm, you’ll recognize many beautiful white buildings.
But that’s not everything. From everywhere in the resort, you are able to catch brilliant views of the beach and the Baltic Sea.
Enjoying a cozy room with a great view
After arriving by car (you may opt for a parking space yourself for a minimal fee or let the hotel park your car for a slightly higher fare), we were greeted very friendly at the reception of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm.
We had the pleasure to get upgraded to a room with sea view in the main building – something you should definitely opt for at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm as the view is absolutely great due to the location right at the sea. However, the rooms are relatively small for a holiday resort.
Our Classic Room with sea view had approximately 30 square meters. The furniture including a large and comfortable King Bed, two bedside tables and a working desk was of high quality and in a good condition regarding the fact that the hotel is not one of the newest luxury hotels in Germany.
What was very nice at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm though was the bathroom. Two sinks, a large bathtub and a detached shower as well a detached toilet (both in one area) made impression on us. The design of the room including the marble bathroom was nice as well.
Indulging in the Spa
We liked our room at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm even though it was pretty small. However, the Spa area was even better than the room.
It’s a little uncomfortable getting there for most guests as the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm consists of several different buildings and there are no ways underground. That means that you have to either get from building to another in the cold (it was February when we visited) or you may change in the Spa area.
Both was just fine for us, but may be a little uncomfortable for guests that are looking for a Spa retreat. You may also opt for a room in the Spa building, offering in-house access to the Spa. That may be absolutely worth it as the Spa area is absolutely amazing.
A large lap pool with a nice temperature, an enormous whirlpool and dozens of loungers. Sadly, the view of the Baltic Sea is a little disturbed by other buildings.
Heating up at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm
Yet, that’s hardly everything the Spa of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm has to offer. Even though the pool area unquestionably is the most spectacular one, there is also a nice sauna area in the basement.
The sauna area consists of a large hammam, two steam baths and two saunas. Additionally, there are several showers for cooling after enjoying the hot areas.
In the middle of the sauna area there is also a little cool down area. All in all, a very enjoyable Spa area with everything we were looking for. Another nice feature is the pool bar that offers light snacks, cocktails, drinks and even special smoothies. Last but not least, the gym of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm is worth a mention.
Not being one of the largest I’ve seen in the last months, but well equipped with many free weights and all the machines you may need for cardio or strength training. Towels, apples and water are available free of charge throughout the Spa and the gym area.
Starting the day with poolside breakfast
Talking about the pool area, it is worth a mention that the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm offers a small complimentary breakfast at the pool bar in the early morning. You may enjoy fresh juices, pastries, yogurts and fruits when swimming in the morning.
Another small buffet with freshly squeezed juices and coffee awaits you in the lobby. These feature offered by the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm need to be especially mentioned in this hotel review as only few luxury hotels offer anything similar.
After that great start in the morning, we also opted for the large breakfast buffet.
On both mornings, it was crowded due to the good occupancy on Valentine’s Day. Due to that, the atmosphere was a little stressful and the buffet way too crowded. The service at the same time was quite good considering the masses of people in the restaurant.
The breakfast buffet itself was satisfying with many local dishes (especially fresh fish), good local bread and rolls and many international delights. The quality and the service definitely made up for the crowded restaurant.
Sipping drinks in a cozy atmosphere
As we love to test everything a hotel has to offer for our hotel reviews, we decided to also order room service one evening. As we were not very hungry, we shared a dish. The noodles with a creamy mushroom sauce were well cooked and tasted pretty good.
However, the dish was nothing spectacular that would need a special mention. The drinks we had the other evening were a little more spectacular in that regard. While not being presented in a special fashion, the atmosphere in the bar of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm (offering great views of the Baltic Sea at daytime) is great.
Some good drinks, a choice of nuts that are replenished in a few seconds and a cozy atmosphere: There is not much more we need for a great evening!
Good Bye Grand Hotel Heiligendamm
We have to admit that we wouldn’t expect to leave the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm with so much new energy after just two days. The good food, the amazing Spa and the brilliant location invited for great relaxation.
Even though there were some minor downers like the fact that there are no coffee and tea making facilities in the room, we enjoyed our stay to the utmost. I’d definitely recommend spending a weekend or even more time at the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm when you want to relax.
The rooms with sea view, while not very generously sized, are very cozy and the bathrooms are all great. However, you may find some small signs of the age throughout the hotel. That, however, does rarely influence our hotel review as the condition of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm was very good overall.
That’s something I’m hardly saying, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be coming back to the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm rather sooner than later!
