Train Review: Northeast Regional (Coach Class)
When we visited Chicago, Boston and New York in March, we decided to not only fly domestic in the US, but also try the Northeast Regional. On the short route from Boston to New York, we took the opportunity to board the Northeast Regional. This time, we decided against Business Class as I heard many reports are similar quality of the journey in Coach Class. To be honest, we were pretty satisfied!
Traveling from Boston to New York by train means that you may either choose the Northeast Regional (a little slower with some stops) or the Acela Express (faster with only a few stops). As we were not in a hurry, we opted for the way cheaper option, the Northeast Regional which only takes 45 minutes longer than the Acela Express.
Also, we decided to buy tickets in Coach Class as I heard many reports about a similar experience in Business and Coach Class in the Northeast Regional. Especially compared to flights, the seat pitch even in Coach was way superior, so we were happy about our choice.
Generous seat pitch in the Northeast Regional
What we especially liked about our journey in the Northeast Regional was the generous seat pitch.
While we are used to little space on Economy and even Business Class flights on regional routes, we were very happy about the large leg room in the Northeast Regional. You may stretch out and sleep or just relax in the seat without any problems.
Seating itself is very comfortable as well. Even though there are no leather chairs, the fabric seats are very okay as well. Especially due to the large size and the thickness of the fabric makes seating in the Northeast Regional very comfortable.
Moreover, there is a large table at all seats that are non-party seats, so working in the Northeast Regional is very pleasant even in Coach Class.
Room for improvement in terms of food in the Northeast Regional
Even though the seating in the Northeast Regional is very comfortable and pleasant, there is room for improvement for Amtrak as well.
The offered food in the food car is boring to point it out friendly. There is rarely any choice and worst of all, there are pretty much no healthy items. As I didn’t find anything I’d really enjoy, I opted for a cream cheese bagel. At least, there was choice of different bagels that are served with Philadelphia Cream Cheese and a plastic knife.
Well, definitely nothing to write home about in terms of taste or quality, so be sure to bring something to eat with you when taking the Northeast Regional – the food car is rarely comparable to what is offered in several European Trains, while the prices are similar.
Punctual arrival with the Northeast Regional
The Northeast Regional, especially in Coach Class, may not be a train that offers a great dining experience, but apart from that we found it right very pleasant.
Generous leg room, comfortable seating and punctual arrival at the New York Penn Station made this journey a very good one. Especially considering the time saved compared to driving out to the Boston Logan Airport and back to the city from the New York JFK, La Guardia or Newark Airport makes me highly recommend taking the Northeast Regional.
What’s also enjoyable when taking the Northeast Regional is having a look out of the windows as the nature in the area is pretty nice to have a look at and the views of the New York Skyline some minutes before arriving at Penn Station are adorable as well!
