City Guide: Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, is nowadays a booming city. Etihad Airways serves flights to many destinations via and from Abu Dhabi. Hard to imagine that Abu Dhabi once was a small fishing village – until oil has been discovered, which changed Abu Dhabi elementarily. The result is a city which doesn’t seem to stop growing anytime soon. Nevertheless, religious values are not forgotten at all!

Abu Dhabi’s top things to do are very easy to specify: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Marina Mall, Emirates Palace, spending some time at the beach and strolling around in the city to admire the buildings – every single one a bit higher and more spectacular than the one before…

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an absolute must-see in Abu Dhabi! A religious place which has become almost touristic by now.

Nevertheless, the dress code has still to be adhered! When you wish to visit the mosque, there are separate changing rooms for men as well as for women. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque even provides the clothing (which says everything about tourism there). But don’t you dare going there without it as there is ‘security’ watching who enters and how (s)he’s dressed.

Marina Mall Abu Dhabi

Marina Mall is a big shopping center in Abu Dhabi where pretty much everything can be found.

What we did and what we would highly recommend you to do is paying the food court a visit. If you’re hungry, you’re probably starving just because you can’t decide where to go and what to eat. The choice there is huge!

Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi

When we first saw the impressive Emirates Palace and recognized several armed men next to the doors, we were wondering who or what the hell is in there. Government? International political meeting?

Well, no. The Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi is a hotel. And I don’t want to know how high the price is for one night though. Especially considering the barbed wire we discovered later on surrounding the area…

Sun and beach in Abu Dhabi

Is there anything more I need to say? …

Especially in December, when the temperatures in Abu Dhabi are “cold”, it is very enjoyable to spend some time at the beach. Views of the skyline are breathtaking, even the noise of the traffic was kind of isolated!

Higher and higher – an architectural spot

When visiting Abu Dhabi, one notices inevitable the city being a construction site with cranes everywhere. Abu Dhabi is simply growing and growing and growing.

However, some buildings look just crazy and I asked myself how this construction works. But one cannot deny that they are all chic and very modern!

Heritage Village

Also worth a mention is Heritage Village. It looked awesome when we passed by, but most things were already closed when we reached it. However, watching the sunset afterwards totally made this up!

Additionally, I really recommend spending some time at any lounge at Abu Dhabi Airport – even if you have to pay an entrance fee, the airport and especially Etihad Airways offer the best lounges we’ve been to so far!
