Mont Rochelle in the Western Cape is one of only few Virgin Limited Edition Hotels, a selection of exclusive luxury hotels all over the world. It was taken over and fully refurnished in 2014. Located in Franschhoek, just a one hour drive away from Cape Town, Mont Rochelle is something special indeed. The focus of the hotel is not only on outstanding relaxation, but also on the best wines and food in the whole country.
Mont Rochelle is one of the smallest luxury hotels in the Cape Area. With just 22 rooms, Mont Rochelle sets new standards in terms of exclusivity. At the same time, the hotel keeps a close link to the history which gets obvious when seeing the hotel for the very first time.
The location in Franschhoek which was once under control of the French is more special than one might think as the region is popular for producing some of the best wines in South Africa. Located right in a wine yard, Mont Rochelle could rarely have a more authentic location.
With the complete makeover in 2014, the rooms at Mont Rochelle look modern and absolutely cozy at the same time.
It hits the spot that all rooms are named like sorts of wine. The four Shiraz Rooms are the smallest ones of the resort, but already have a little balcony with beautiful views of the valley.
The six Merlot Rooms with a size of 38 square meters (409 square feet) are a little more spacious and also a little more colorful.
Guests searching for a very special experience may opt for one of the six Cabernet Rooms which also boost a large private terrace with stunning views.
They are only beaten by the four Pinotage and two Cap Classique Suites with the latter even offering a private plunge pool!
Experiencing Mont Rochelle is not possible without also trying the dining facilities of the luxury hotel. With two restaurants for just 22 rooms, there is a lot of privacy for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Miko, Mont Rochelle’s main restaurant, is a renowned gourmet restaurant that focuses on international dishes with South African influences. Miko is open for breakfast and lunch every day and may also be enjoyed for dinner at all weekdays except Sunday.
The more casual Country Kitchen invites guests for a relaxed and tasty lunch or dinner with best wines of the attached wine cellar all days of the week from 10 am to 11 pm.
The bar at Mont Rochelle is the spot to be before and after dinner. Special pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks round up the great experience at Mont Rochelle.
Mont Rochelle doesn’t offer large leisure facilities like other hotels do. However, there is a lovely little pool with loungers all around.
Swimming with great views of the valley in the sun of South Africa may be amazing enough even when the pool is not right perfect for labs. There’s also a hammam which may be used complimentary as long as there is no treatment taking place. Other activities at Mont Rochelle include hiking, horseback riding, wine tasting, retail therapies, golf or biking.
There’s also a gym that may be used from 6 am to 10 pm by guests of Mont Rochelle. Something not to forget about are treatments at the Spa of Mont Rochelle which will make holidays in the Cape Area even more relaxing.
Mont Rochelle sounds like quite an amazing hotel. However, it is not as expensive as one might expect. Room rates are starting at 2.920 ZAR (~ 210 Euro / 230 US-Dollar) for the Shiraz Room in low season which starts May 1st and ends on September 30th.
In high season, the same room is available for 4.460 ZAR (~ 320 Euro / 355 US-Dollar). All rates at Mont Rochelle include daily breakfast, local taxes, complimentary drinks and snacks out of the minibar, complimentary Wi-Fi and scheduled transfers between Mont Rochelle and Franschhoek.
