Airline Review: Lufthansa (regional Business)

Lufthansa is known for its brilliant long-haul first class, but not at all for its premium product on short haul flights. Nevertheless, the Lufthansa Business Class on regional flights is not bad. While service and food are very good, the seating is average at best. Is paying extra for business class on Lufthansa regional flights worth it?

Check out our rating of Lufthansa (regional Business)!

Our regional flight in the Lufthansa Business Class started five hours later than expected as the employees of Athens Airport decided to strike that day.

  • Airplane: Airbus A321
  • Cabin Class: Business
  • Daytime: Afternoon
  • Food: Lunch
  • Seat Pitch: 30 Inch (76 Centimeter)
  • Seat Width: 18 Inch (46 Centimeter)

Surprisingly, boarding of our Lufthansa Airbus A321 was by bus, which made the process a little stressful.

Athens Airport

We waited for the flight to start for one hour on the tarmac

There was an extra bus for premium passengers and frequent flyers, but we missed it. Nevertheless, we were to board the airplane as the first passengers in the second bus and settled at the first row instantly.

Seating in the Lufthansa Business Class

The Lufthansa Airbus A321 is the biggest regional plane Lufthansa has in its fleet. Yet, seating is similar in all Lufthansa regional jets.

There are three seats on each side of the row with the middle one being blocked for the comfort of business class passengers. The middle seat is equipped with a little table where you can either place drinks or other items.

The seats themselves are the same as in economy class and are not very comfortable for long journeys. Nevertheless, the seats are modern and clean, making them acceptable for a premium product.

The seat pitch in the rows after the first one leaves something to be desired, but the pitch in first row is absolutely amazing.

The seat width in the Lufthansa Business Class is average at best and not comparable to a real premium product on regional flights.

Dining in the Lufthansa Business Class

Depending on the time of the day and the length of the flight, Lufthansa serves different food in the regional business class.

Lunch service started with drinks and nuts

As we flew in the afternoon on a relatively long flight, we were served a three-course dinner. The starter was named “Greek Salad”, but was more an antipasti style version of the dish.

Lufthansa A321 Business Class Menu

The menu read as follows

As a main dish we were served rabbit in creamy sauce (for Sabrina) and noodles with seafood (for me), both accompanied by a small salad. As a dessert, we enjoyed a citrus cake. The only choice was the main dish, but we were happy with the food anyway.

All came together on one tray and the portions were generous. The noodles were a little dull, while the rabbit was very good.

The starters tasted just fine and the dessert was tasty as always. Drinks (including alcohol) were offered four times during the two hours and thirty minutes of our flight.

Entertainment in the Lufthansa Business Class

Even though the business class is the flagship product of Lufthansa on regional flights, there was no in-seat-entertainment available.

Lufthansa A321 Business Class Newspaper

Newspapers were handed out before departure

That’s the case with all Lufthansa airplanes as all existing screen (overhead) are getting removed. This means that your entertainment options are limited to newspapers and magazines (generous choice in different languages) and the new Lufthansa on-board Wi-Fi.

Lufthansa A321 Business Class Magazines

There was also a choice of magazines

The latter is a great addition as the streaming services don’t only allow you to browse the web (for an extra-charge), but also read magazines not available as a hard copy and watch movies or series while flying high above the earth. Anyway, you should be aware that this entertainment option is not available on all Lufthansa planes, but is supposed to be in the future.

Bottom line Lufthansa Business Class

Overall, the Lufthansa Business Class on the Airbus A321 is a decent product. The food is quite good, the service was exceptional and very friendly on this particular flight from Athens to Frankfurt and the entertainment options are decent (if the plane you are flying with got Wi-Fi).

Lufthansa A321 Business Class Lavatories

The lavatories don’t come with special amenities

Only the seating leaves a lot to be desired, but that’s something that didn’t bother us too much taking into account that the distances in Europe are not long anyway. We’d definitely fly the Lufthansa Business Class on regional flights again.

Beautiful views can be enjoyed in Economy and Business Class

Yet, we would not invest the extra money without an attached long haul flight as the Lufthansa Business Class is easily four times more expensive than the Economy Class if you book in advance.
