The Hideaway Swellendam is a special property when it comes to a review. While we usually review “classic” four or five star hotels, The Hideaway Swellendam is officially advertised as a luxury Bed & Breakfast. Yet, the hotel is definitely comparable to what is offered in luxury hotels all over the world, just with a way more personal touch!

The Hideaway Swellendam is the best rated Bed & Breakfast in the tiny town on the Garden Route. Located a little further away from the sea, the density of hotels in this area is way lower than in other cities.
Welcome Tea at The Hideaway Swellendam
Nevertheless, we didn’t regret to stay at The Hideaway Swellendam, especially as the experience was somewhat different than the hotels we usually review.
The Hideaway has four suites which are all totally private and separated from the owner’s house.
We opted for the Ecstasy Rose Suite which is the most expensive of the relatively similar priced suites.

It comes with a large bed and living room which is comparable to what other hotels call a Junior Suite.
The interior is classic and tasteful and consists of a large bed with a heated blanket, a small table with two armchairs, a desk with another armchair, a bookshelf as well as a large wardrobe.
Moreover, there’s another wardrobe which houses the complimentary minibar which comes with several cans of coke, Schweppes, beer, water and some fresh milk.
Well-stocked minibar
You may also make use of the complimentary coffee and tea making facilities and the short bread which is awaiting you upon arrival.
The real highlight of the Ecstasy Rose Suite at The Hideaway Swellendam is the bathroom which comes with a large couple shower, two sinks, a toilet and a deep soaking tub.

Toiletries are provided in big bottles and are of a very high quality. You can also find several soft towels, additional toiletries for your comfort and several special amenities like bathing salt, a rubber duck and even some candles for a romantic atmosphere.
Definitely a marble bathroom to fall in love with!
The Hideaway Swellendam is a Bed & Breakfast and though not comparable to hotels in all regards. One difference are the facilities which are rather limited. There is a very small pool which is heated by the sun and though not warm enough in winter. Yet, a new and way larger pool is already planned and is supposed to open soon!
The garden of The Hideaway is quite nice
Moreover, there’s a large garden with beautiful flowers which invites you to just stroll around and enjoy nature. Besides, the hosts of The Hideaway Swellendam tend to invite guests into the living room for a glass of wine and some snacks in the evening. Definitely recommendable for a good start into the evening and a nice chat!
The Hideaway Swellendam is renowned for its breakfast. Presented by the hosts themselves, Jackie and Stephen especially value homemade products. If they cannot produce it at home, they try to get it from their neighbors or in the region.
Buffet at The Hideaway Swellendam
Freshly baked breads, muffins, selected cheeses and cold cuts, homemade jams, freshly prepared fruit salad and several juices are just some items from the buffet. Additionally, you may order anything from the menu which has several hot options including eggs, sausages and much more.
On request, you may also order just what you want. As we were not hungry, we skipped that option, but what other guests got looked very good!
The hard product of The Hideaway Swellendam is decent and the hosts are very friendly and accommodating, too.
Little touches like the complimentary port wine are awaiting you upon arrival
While Jackie was warm and friendly all the time, Stephen was very helpful, but a little too pedantic from time to time. Nevertheless, The Hideaway Swellendam is definitely worth a recommendation.
The Hideaway Swellendam is an expensive, yet very enjoyable bed and breakfast
The good tips we got for dinner and the trip we did the next day were a bonus that made our stay even better. All in all, we’d definitely come back to The Hideaway should we be in the area in the future!
