Zurich: Top things to do and see

Often mistakenly considered as the capital of Switzerland (which has de jure none), Zurich is the biggest city in Switzerland. Unfortunately, Zurich is no exception when it comes to the generally high Swiss prices. However, there are many things to be admired in walking distance. If you have more time or money, we have another recommendation!

  1. Stroll along Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse is probably the most famous shopping street in Zurich. Only exclusive – and thus expensive – shops have a spot there.

As I’m of the opinion that one should have seen Bahnhofstrasse Zurich, here’s a small hint. If you are not in shopping mood or simply want to avoid crowds, go there on a Sunday as the shops will be closed then.

  1. Visit zooh! Zurich

Zurich’s zoo is the most diversified, modern and appropriate to the species I’ve been to so far. However, the entrance fee has a heavy price tag.

So if you are in Zurich during the week, live anticyclical. Visit the zoo during the week when the kids are at school. When families visit the zoo on weekends, check out the shopping street Bahnhofstrasse.

  1. Have a hot chocolate at café Sprüngli

Sprüngli is a café located at the Bahnhofstrasse and definitely a must-go!

Switzerland is known for its amazing chocolate. Sprüngli is probably one of the most famous cafés of the country. If you want to indulge in the taste of chocolate, Sprüngli is the place to go!

  1. Glance at Grossmünster Zurich

Grossmünster is a protestant church in Zurich. The Romanesque style is worth seeing for sure.

Moreover, Grossmünster is a great relic from the early 12th century when construction works began.

  1. Spend time by Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich probably is one of the main reasons for why Zurich was chosen as the European city with the highest quality of life.

In winter, there were not many people. However, it is a popular place to spend time at in summer.

  1. Zurich Opera House

Zurich Opera House is a real gem dating back to the late 19th century.

Even if you are not interested in hearing a concert, gain at least an impression of the architecture!

  1. Old Town Zurich

Zurich is not a city of sights, but rather a city of great flair and atmosphere. Thus, Zurich’s Old Town is the place to be!

Moreover, the old town is the place where culture, social life, history and architecture meet. Many shops, bars as well as restaurants can be found in the old town!

  1. It’s a brilliant city for a break but absolutely boring to live there on Sundays everything is closed. Love the old town really pretty and expensive shops

    • well not everythings closed on sundays. there are plenty of coffees and restaurants open and if the weather is fine, you have a lot of nice outdoor options (üetliberg, werdinsel, lake, …. … ). and as switzerland is small, just hop on a train (unfortunately an espensive experience) and ride to an other city

      • Yes luckily, restaurants and cafés are open. But no shops – it’s the same in Germany though, can get boring from time to time

  2. I absolutely agree with you about the Zürich zoo. It’s one of the best zoos I have ever been to. 🙂
