Johannesburg: Top things to do and see

Johannesburg is the biggest city in South Africa and poverty stricken. Be prepared that the city is dirty and that you won’t feel really safe when it comes to Johannesburg. Not any surprisingly, Johannesburg is not a very touristic spot, but there are some places which might be worth seeing. As far as I’m concerned, I hated Johannesburg, but here are my top things to do and see there!

  1. Gandhi Square Johannesburg

As Mahatma Gandhi spent some time in South Africa in his early 20s, it does not come as a surprise that he was even then already a political activist and pacifist.

Located in the Central Business District in Johannesburg, a plaza is named in his honor. Not very spectacular, but one of the nicer things to see.

  1. Gold Reef City Casino & Theme Park Johannesburg

In the late 19th century, a huge gold rush started in Johannesburg. Gold Reef City is an amusement park broaching this gold rush.

Moreover, there is a hotel around which seems to be good for families.

  1. Visit the Apartheid Museum Johannesburg

Apartheid was a truly big issue in South Africa. Now, it is exactly where it belongs – in a museum.

Broaching all about apartheid in South Africa from its early beginnings to Nelson Mandela, the Apartheid Museum is really recommendable and the only must-visit in Johannesburg!

  1. Constitution Hill Johannesburg

As the name already says, Constitution Hill Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Reminding of a moving past of a righteous constitution, the flame of democracy is a good example for that.

Next to it is the old Fort which is also worth seeing, but that’s basically it.

  1. Isn’t it funny how someone can love a place and another really hate it? I really love Jo’burg 🙂 I agree that the Apartheid Museum is a must see.
