Gran Hotel La Florida Barcelona is without any doubt the most unique luxury hotel in Barcelona. While all other properties are located in the city center, Gran Hotel La Florida is located high up on Tibidabo. On the one hand, this means that you have to take a taxi or a combination of the funicular and the metro to reach the city center. On the other hand, the privacy and exclusive luxury of the property is something truly amazing.
With two nights in Barcelona, we decided to split our stay between one hotel in the city center, Hotel Majestic Barcelona which we’ll review later, and Gran Hotel La Florida Barcelona.
Due to its special location and my very good memories of the property, which I stayed at several years ago, the luxury hotel up on Tibidabo was an obvious choice to start our winter escape in Barcelona.
Even though the property is definitely not perfect, we didn’t regret our choice to stay at Gran Hotel La Florida at all.
When checking in prior noon, we were not only warmly welcomed, but also told that our room will be ready in just a minute.
The room we got upgraded to was just truly lovely. The Junior Suite with views of Barcelona and the sea (at least in theory) was very spacious and actually felt more like a real suite than a Junior Suite.
The large entrance area with the wardrobes was followed by a living room, which came with the working desk and a lounging area.
To the far end of the Junior Suite at Gran Hotel La Florida was the bedroom, which came with the stunning views of Barcelona.
This one was surrounded by a balcony with two chairs and a little table, which is most likely especially enjoyable in summer.
The interior of the Junior Suite was contemporary and stylish. Even though not everything is in a good condition any more (several bumps etc.), Gran Hotel La Florida doesn’t really feel like a place which is in deep need of a renovation.
The bathroom of our Junior Suite at Gran Hotel La Florida totally amazed me at first sight.
Not only is the marble bathroom generally very nice, but it also came with all you expect from a bathroom in a luxury hotel. Two sinks, a large deep-soaking tub, a seperated toilet and also a seperated rain shower.
The L’Occitane toiletries were another nice touch. Yet, there was one issue which is somewhat bothersome: the bathroom doesn’t have a door and is directly connected to the entrance area.
That said, you always feel somewhat exposed in the bathroom, which definitely is weird. Besides that the bathroom of the Junior Suite at Gran Hotel La Florida was absolutely amazing!
After checking in, we were in deep need of some relaxation after the very early flight from Berlin. We also opted for staying at Gran Hotel La Florida Barcelona as the hotel has some decent relaxation facilities.
These are even more amazing in summer as there is an outdoor pool and there are also several loungers, which make sunbathing with views of Barcelona very enjoyable.
In winter, you may also use the heated outdoor pool (which is quite cool nevertheless) or the indoor pool, which is ideal for labs and comes with a very good temperature.
The indoor area also comes with several loungers and a seperated Spa area for men and women, where a steam bath and a sauna can be found. Yet, those facilities seemed to be out of order during our stay.
At this point, it is worth mentioning that the whole Spa of Gran Hotel La Florida area looked a little bit passed its prime. In contrast, the gym was in a very good condition with several modern machines.
However, it was very strange that the machines are in a somewhat open area connected with the pool.
Once again, I felt a little exposed when working out.
As a Leaders Club Unlimited benefit, we were invited for a dinner at Gran Hotel La Florida. As the situation at the hotel was a little challenging due to two events taking place, we were asked whether we preffered having a fine dining experience or rather enjoy a casual dinner.
We opted for the latter, but things didn’t really seem to work out and the hotel didn’t have any table available when we arrived for dinner. We took the situation with humor and asked to just enjoy some tapas in the very cozy bar.
Our wish was taken care of in just minutes and we ordered several things from the menu. Even though everything at Gran Hotel La Florida is a little pricey, the quality of all tapas was top-notch.
We still dream of the amazing cheese and ham croquetes, which were some of the best tapas we ever enjoyed! Service in the bar was a little sloppy, but very friendly and warm.
I still remember having breakfast with stunning views of Barcelona at Gran Hotel La Florida Barcelona. As it was foggy during our stay, this was not possible this time. Also, breakfast was in a different room due to the events.
The improvised breakfast was surprisingly good nevertheless. It’s worth noting that I don’t expect anything from breakfast in Southern Europe, but at Gran Hotel La Florida my (low) hopes were highly exceeded.
Not only was there the option to order several hot dishes free of charge (the omelet I had was stunning!), but also a very nice buffet with a decent selection of mainly cold items.
The sweet selection was good as it’s the norm in Spain, but also the savory selection was absolutely decent.
If brekafast in Spain would always be as good as it was at Gran Hotel La Florida, I think I’d have to work on my low expectations!
If you got appointments in the city center or visit Barcelona for sightseeing, Gran Hotel La Florida may not be the perfect choice.
If you however spend more than just one or two nights in Barcelona, the luxury hotel is the ideal retreat to escape the busy city. The Spa area with its two pools, the spacious rooms with stunning views of Barcelona and the very warm and friendly staff make Gran Hotel La Florida an absolutely amazing option for staying in Barcelona.
While there’s a need for a renovation in some areas, I still find the property to be in a totally fine condition. Especially when considering the value for the money, I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Gran Hotel La Florida again!
