Belmond Hotel das Cataratas definitely is one of the most prominent hotels in South America. The property is the only hotel located inside the Iguazu National Park on the Brazilian side and though offers the opportunity to not only visit the falls several times a day, but also before and after the crowds left the park. Learn more about the hotel in our extensive review!
Generally, I’m trying to not overpay for a hotel. At Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, this is everything but easy as the property is quite expensive due to its unique location.
That made me the property especially interesting to write a hotel review about. You’ll see soon whether it’s worth to splurge for staying at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas! Arriving at the property late, we were immediately put in a shuttle upon arriving at the entrance of the park.
The drive from the airport to the entrance are only five minutes. Surprisingly, the shuttle was relatively old and everything but luxurious. Due to the speed limit, the ride takes a good 15 to 20 minutes. As we were a total of ten guests in the shuttle, the check-in procedure also took another twenty minutes, which meants that it took more than one hour from the airport to finally get into the room.
Even though Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is relatively large, the rooms are on the rather small side. We booked the basic room category called Superior Room.
Other than that you can also find Deluxe Rooms, Deluxe Rooms with views of the fall and Junior Suites. Our Superior Room was located on the ground floor and faced parts of the garden and parts of the building.
Upon entering, you find yourself in the hallway with the bathroom to the right. Following the way, you’ll find yourself in the main room, which consists of a wardrobe to the right, a luggage rack to the left, a Queen Bed in the middle of the room and opposite a table with two chairs and a flat screen television.
What you don’t find in the Superior Room at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is a working desk. Also, the window is relatively small and makes the room, especially on the ground floor, rather dark.
The classic decor, the small details like flip flops, which we were proactively offered to take with us were quite nice though. Generally, the rooms at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas are quite cozy, but at the same time not amazing by any means.
Surprisingly, the bathroom of the Superior Room at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas s relatively large. Opposite of the entrance door, there’s a large mirror with the double sink below.
To the right, there’s the toilet and to the left is a shower-tub combo. This one however is better than what you see at most other hotels as it comes with a nice shower head, a good pressure and also a glass wall, which makes showering in the bathtub way more comfortable.
The whole design of the bathroom was very nice as well, especially as it really fitted into the traditonal scheme of the hotel.
The very special toiletries and little details like the wooden grid the flannels were placed on made the bathroom very nice.
Belmond Hotel das Cataratas offers its guests relatively many facilities to enjoy taking into account the limited space right next to the falls.
The gym is quite small though with just one machine for strength training, a few free weights and a couple of cardio machines. At least you can find both, water and apples, in the gym.
The pool is located outside, which might be problematic when you travel to the Iguazu Falls in winter as the temperatures can drop quite low. Besides that, the pool is very nice as it’s big and has a good temperature.
There are also dozens of loungers with poolboy service. The only thing, which really bothered me in this regard is the fact that the restaurant is located right next to the pool, which means that you are constantly watched while swimming, especially during breakfast.
Before getting to the food, I’d like to include a special section in this hotel review. As it is what makes Belmond Hotel das Cataratas such a special hotel, the access to the Iguazu Falls deserves a special mention here.
Basically, you need to walking just two minutes from the main entrance (where you also see the falls in distance) and you’ll enjoy the first panorama. Following the route, you’ll find several more amazing spots to watch the falls.
You can even take the whole track by foot in just one hour and you’ll see everything of the Iguazu Falls. The location really is hard to beat. Plus, you are paying the entrance fee to the park just once, regardless of how often you leave and enter.
Belmond Hotel das Cataratas also offers other experiences like a visit to the Argentinian side, shopping in Parguay or city tours for an additional charge.
As we were staying at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas during Easter, the hotel was fully booked. This meant that we didn’t get a reservation in the a la carte restaurant.
As we were not in the mood for the BBQ buffet, which was offered in the breakfast restaurant by the pool, we decided to have room service once and dinner at the bar the other day.
At room service, we ordered the burger, which was definitely better than average. The beef was well executed and the chips were crispy. At the bar we had a sandwich and also went for a Caesar Salad.
Both dishes were tasty, but nothing to write home about. We also went for two cocktails, which were quite nice. Nevertheless, none of the food served at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas will stick to my mind for longer.
The last thing I’d like to focus on in this hotel review is the breakfast served at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas. As mentioned before, breakfast is served by the pool.
While we were seating indoor the first day, we went for outdoor seating the second. The latter definitely is the better or even only nice option as the indoor area is extremly noisy and though everything but nice to sit.
The breakfast buffet itself is quite nice and comes with a rich selection of fruits, joghurts, hot options and so on. There’s also an omelette station. If you like sparkling wine for breakfast, you might also enjoy this one at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas.
Nevertheless, I again didn’t find the breakfast spectacular by any means. I kind of expected more of a Belmond property, especially as we are talking about a luxury hotel, which is everything but cheap.
I definitely wouldn’t say that I was disappointed by Belmond Hotel das Cataratas. The rooms come with a nice decor, the location is absolutely amazing, the service is good, the pool is nice and the gym is okay. Anyway, I kind of expected more when it comes to the size and the location of the rooms as well as the food.
Neither breakfast nor dinner made any impression on me, which somewhat surprises taking into account that food at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is quite expensive. Nevertheless, I’d recommend staying at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas if you want to visit the falls. The extra hours before and after the crowd make the hotel a great place to explore the area. However, I think it’s enough to stay one night!
