The Como Melbourne is located in the outskirts of Melbourne in Yarra, a very special area of the city. Even though I didn’t really like the location, the hotel itself is quite nice. You’ll see why when reading our extensive hotel review!
After staying at Quay West Suites Melbourne for two nights, I decided to try another property in Melbourne.
Due to a great Accorhotels Sale, I decided to stay at The Como Melbourne for approximately 130 Euro per night including breakfast.
The property is located in Yarra, which is well connected to the city center and supposed to be an up and coming area. Yet, I didn’t find the areas around The Como Meöbourne to be that special. Yet, the property itself is definitely worth recommending. Not only because of the generous upgrade I received.
After a quick and friendly check-in I got two keys for a One Bedroom Suite. While Le Club Accor Gold members are treated nicely in Australia in general, I didn’t exactly expect a suite upgrade, but who am I to say no to it.
Upon entering the suite, I found myself in a large living room with a dining table with four chairs, a kitchenette, a couch area, a large working desk and a small area for luggage.
Seperated from the living room by a door is the bedroom of the One Bedroom Suite at The Como Melbourne. While way small, the bedroom feels very homely and comes with a very comfortable King Bed. Connected to the bedroom is the bathroom (there’s just one in this suite).
Both, the bedroom and the living room of my suite faced a courtyard of sorts and were very calm accordingly.
It’s worth noting that the whole suite was not only perfectly clean, but also comes with a stunning design and was in a great condition overall. Plus, there’s even a small balcony. Lovely.
The bathoom of the One Bedroom Suite at The Como Melbourne is not any less nice than the suite itself. While the dark colors might not be for everyone, I actually adored the whole design.
There’s just a single sink and also no seperate room for the toilet, but the deep soaking tub and the seperated shower (with great pressure) were both amazing.
Two other positive notes: The bathrooms at The Como Melbourne might be the most plush ones I’ve ever enjoyed and the rubber duck (which you can take home) is a nice little gimmick. The toiletries by Appelles are not spectacular, but decent.
While I didn’t have the chance to try the cuisine of The Como Melbourne, I at least enjoyed the welcome drink alongside a small snack at the bar. While the service was attentive and the onion rings were decent, I didn’t really like the atmsophere.
The bar just isn’t a place to stay. In favor of the hotel: you can choose any wine on the menu as a welcome drink.
Talking about atmosphere: The breakfast restaurant of The Como Melbourne isn’t a place to stay either.
I can’t really make up my mind about what the designers might have thought when designing the space, but sitting right next to an office entrance with several people walking by and watching you eating just isn’t cool.
The breakfast spread as such wasn’t too big, but the quality was very high, so there’s nothing bad to say. In addition, if you’ve got breakfast included in your rate at The Como Melbourne, you may order any hot breakfast dish complimentary.
I opted for an egg-white omelette, which was very good.
Something great about The Como Melbourne is that the property comes with a pool, a gym and even a sauna on the top floor. To my surprise, the way up to this area is sort-of weird.
You can’t go about with the elevators, but instead walk through a not very well maintained staircase. Another weird aspect is the location of the gym, which is pretty much located in the hallway, which leads to the pool.
While I don’t mind too much while having a workout, I still find it weird if people with bathrobes pass by. The equipment as such is okay for cardio training, but leaves a lot to be desired for strength training. The pool is substantally nicer and comes with a cool set-up of lounging options.
However, the size and shape of the pool don’t make it ideal for swimming laps. Plus, the beanbags around the pool aren’t in a very good condition any more and look dirty.
The Como Melbourne is a nice choice for staying in Melbourne in case you don’t have to be in the city center. The suite I got was spacious, very nicely designed and in a very good condition.
There’s a nice pool area, good breakfast and very friendly and helpful service. The gym as well as the atmosphere of the bar and the restaurant are downsides of the property. Yet, I wouldn’t hesitate recommending The Como Melbourne for anyone looking for a hotel offering good value for the money.
