Hilton Cardiff is one of the most convenient located hotels in Cardiff. While the property is supposed to be one of the best Hiltons in the United Kingdom, I wasn’t entirely happy about my stay. Learn why in our extensive hotel review!
The Hilton Cardiff is one of the more modern Hilton Hotels in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the hotel isn’t really new by any stretch of imagination.
Yet, what makes the Hilton a very nice option is the very good location in the city center of Cardiff.
The check-in was quite a mess at the Hilton Cardiff. I had pre-selected a room far away from the elevator on the 6th floor and was ‘upgraded’ to an Executive Room at check-in.
Well, these rooms aren’t any more spacious, but on the 8th floor. As my girlfriend checked-in for me, it was until the late evening that I recognized that I was assigned a room right by the elevator and right below the Executive Lounge. You can imagine the constant noise. Besides that, the Executive Rooms at the Hilton Cardiff are not really spacious.
There’s a King Bed in the middle of the room, then there are two armchairs by the window and a console with the working desk and the television on it. Sadly, the Executive Rooms also lack a proper office chair.
While the room didn’t feel very modern and wasn’t the most nicely furnished, at least the view of the castle was quite nice.
While the room wasn’t really my taste, the bathroom was the real disappointment in terms of design. The walls were mildly pink, making the bathroom feel like a very weird area.
The facilities are so-so. The most positive aspect of the bathrooms at the Hilton Cardiff is that there are both, a shower and a bathtub. The shower pressure was okay, but not great either.
Something else that slightly annoyed me is the fact that there is a clear lack of storage near the sink. Definitely one of the weaker Hilton bathrooms out there.
Sometimes I wonder why Hilton Hotels even bother with an Executive Lounge. The Hilton Cardiff is a good example. The lounge is approximately the size of one or two rooms and offers seating for approximately 20 to 30 people. Well, as you’d expect the lounge was extremly crowded for the evening cocktails. While the view of the castle, in theory, is quite nice, that doesn’t help when it’s dark outside already. The food spread was one of the weakest I’ve seen in some time as well.
There were two hot snacks, which tasted cheap and reheated. Then there were cheeses, veggies and two or three cold options. Those were decent. The choice of drinks was between beer and wine (cheap) as well as soft drinks and coffee. All in all, a rather disappointing experience.
Something I liked about the Hilton Cardiff is the breakfast spread. While the lounge just offers a rather limited choice, the options already looked good up on the 9th floor.
For the proper breakfast, we decided to go to the restaurant on the ground floor. Not only is the seating nicer there, but the buffet is also more extensive. There is a good choice of hot and cold options of all kinds including several freshly cut fruits.
Plus, you may order eggs any style from the kitchen. Even Egg’s Benedict were availalbe. Only the service at breakfast was rather sub-par.
Anyways, I’d say that the breakfast at the Hilton Cardiff is one of the best arguments for the hotel.
In the evening, I also went to the gym of the Hilton Cardiff once. As it was fairly crowded, I didn’t take any pictures. Yet, the gym looked fairly nice with several cardio machines, some strenght machines and free weights. Only the lack of proper daylight is annoying. The Hilton Cardiff also offers a pool, which is located right by the gym.
While it sort-of lacks atmosphere, it’s quite nice for swimming as it’s relatively long. In this area, there are also a few loungers and a jacuzzi. The real downside of this area is that it is actually a members club, meaning it is often crowded and has the feeling of a public swimming pool.
We faced a couple of more problems with the service at the Hilton Cardiff during our stay and were reimbursed with some Hilton Honors Points after a complaint. This was handled very well, which I have to appreciate. Nevertheless, the Hilton Cardiff wouldn’t be my first choice in Cardiff. The rooms are rather small and don’t hit my taste when it comes to design. The same is true for the bathrooms. In addition, the Executive Lounge is quite weak and the pool area lacks atmosphere. The breakfast on the other hand is very good.
