The Peninsula Manila is one of the first luxury hotels that opened in the city and is one of the best till today. During my time in Manila, I had the chance to stay here for two nights and enjoyed my stay very much. In this review, I’ll explain what to expect of staying here.
When in Manila, I split my time between the new Conrad Manila and The Peninsula Manila, one of the landmarks in Makati City.
The Peninsula is a brand with a few ultra-luxurious hotels, mainly present in Asia, but also in cities like Paris. As I didn’t stay at a Peninsula before, I booked two nights for a relatively affordable rate in Manila.
As I had a lot of work to do while in the city, I opted for a room with club access to have a place to work and enjoy some light snacks and drinks.
Despite an extremely early arrival after my flight in the Philippine Airlines regional Business Class (a redeye from Bali arriving at 6 am), the hotel had a room ready for me at 9 am, which was the perfect first touch. After a brief and friendly check-in, I was escorted to my room located on the fifth floor.
The Club Rooms at The Peninsula Manila are basically Standard Rooms with access to the lounge. Thus, the rooms aren’t that spacious. Upon entering, there’s the bathroom to the right and a wardrobe to the left. Further into the room, you’ll find a rather typical layout.
The rooms at The Peninsula Manila come with a very comfortable King Bed, two nightstands, a comfortable chair with an ottoman and a small table in the corner as well as a very large working desk with two chairs.
The view of the street in front through rather small windows isn’t anything to talk about.
On the one hand, the room had everything I was looking for as well as some extras (including lots of amazing office equipment on the working desk). On the other hand, you can see that The Peninsula is aging a bit.
The design isn’t the most modern, but the room was spotlessly clean and in a decent condition, so there’s nothing really bad to say here. Yet, I feel like the room could use a proper office chair at the desk.
Despite the rooms at The Peninsula Manila not being overly spacious, the bathrooms are actually very nice.
While there’s just a single sink, the bathroom otherwise comes with a very nice bathtub as well as two separated rooms, one for the shower, one for the toilet. The former doesn’t have a rain shower head, but at least comes with a decent water pressure.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Peninsula branded toiletries are of the highest quality and smell amazing.
The Club Lounge at The Peninsula Manila is located on a designated floor and isn’t very big. There’s a private concierge desk, where my SIM card was organized, among other things. Then the lounge has a business center with two computers and there’s the main area with a couple of seating arrangements, mainly tables with two chairs as well as a few couches.
The lounge has a few windows and feels airy enough, but the view isn’t great either. Entertainment options include WiFi, a nice selection of newspapers as well as a television. The service in the lounge is amazing and servers are roaming around to fulfill your drink wishes at any time. Besides the drink selection and a few smaller snacks like cookies and whole fruits on the buffet during the day, there are three more formal food services, too. In the morning, there’s a decent breakfast selection with cold and hot options as well as the option to order eggs and other hot dishes from the kitchen.
In the afternoon, you can enjoy a nice afternoon tea with cakes, scones and sandwiches.
In the evening, there’s a basic, yet tasty selection of canapes, including a few hot options.
Yet, I wouldn’t really call it a dinner substitute.
When booking a Club Room at The Peninsula Manila, you may also have breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant on ground floor. I went with this option once and enjoyed the breakfast service very much.
While the seating isn’t particularly great, the buffet selection is nothing short of amazing. There are tons of different cold options, including incredibly tasty fresh fruits, whole coconuts and much more. Additionally, there’s an extensive hot selection with the typical American breakfast as well as dozens of Asian dishes.
Surely, you may also order further dishes, which are freshly prepared for you, from the kitchen. Without any doubt, every morning at The Peninsula Manila is a real feast.
As you’d expect at a hotel of this caliber, The Peninsula Manila offers extensive recreation facilities, including a gym and a pool. The pool is located outdoors in the hotel’s garden.
It’s surprisingly spacious and very nice for swimming laps. While not too hot, it’s just right for swimming and a very nice place to hang out after a long (and hot) day in Manila.
Several loungers are arranged around the pool and bar as well as restaurant services are available poolside, too. The gym is located right by the pool and offers all the equipment you’ll be looking for. It actually more feels like a proper fitness center rather than a typical hotel gym.
Towels, whole fruits and water are available at your convenience. You might also enjoy the sauna and the steam bath, both located right next to the gym.
Despite its age, The Peninsula Manila is still an incredible property. My stay was pretty much flawless, from the early check-in to amazing service and a very nice club lounge.
While the food selection in the club could be better and the rooms will need a refurbishment rather sooner than later, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at The Peninsula Manila again. It’s worth it!
