The Crowne Plaza Hamburg City Center is the flagship property of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) in Hamburg as there is no InterContinental anymore. The hotel is an alright place to stay, but it’s not exceptional either. Read more in our extensive hotel review.
For one of my last stays in Hamburg, I decided to stay at the Crowne Plaza, which is located approximately two kilometers away from the main station and even somewhat further away from the city center. While the location isn’t ideal, prices for the Crowne Plaza are usually below what other properties charge in Hamburg, making it a decent enough option.
After a friendly check-in, I was given my keys for a Club Room on the second highest floor. These rooms are quite similar to Standard Rooms but come with the additional perk of Club Lounge access.
The centerpiece of the room is a Queen Bed with two nightstands.
In the corner, next to the window, you can find a comfortable armchair next to a small table.
Opposite of the bed, you’ll find a flat-screen television and an empty minibar as well as a large working desk with a proper office chair and well placed outlets.
The desk was actually quite good for a four star property.
While the interior isn’t very modern, the room felt cozy enough and ticked all the boxed. The views weren’t any great though.
The bathroom is another weakness as it’s on the small side.
There’s only a single sink, a toilet and a shower-tub combo with a shower curtain. The shower pressure isn’t the greatest either.
All in all, I’d say that the Club Rooms at the Crowne Plaza Hamburg City Center are exactly what you’d expect from this property. There’s no luxury or such, but that’s also not what you are paying for when staying at a Crowne Plaza.
The Crowne Plaza Hamburg City Center offers a small, but sufficient club lounge as it seems that only very few people have access. The lounge is very bright and offers nice views of the city.
The interior is modern and stylish, making up for a nice atmosphere. To my surprise, the buffet was actually better than I expected. In the afternoon, there were some sweet and even some savory snacks.
In the evening, there were a few small plates with starters and desserts as well as one hot dish (meat) with a side.
The quality was quite good and so was the selection of drinks, including wine, sparkling wine and even some spirits.
While nothing to get excited about, I was surprised about the good quality and taste of the various options available in the Club Lounge.
When booking a Club Room, you’ll also enjoy complimentary breakfast, served in the restaurant. The breakfast selection is on-par what I was expecting of a four-star property in Germany. There was a nice enough selection of cheeses, cold cuts, fruits, yogurts and more.
Additionally, there were plenty of hot options in another area of the buffet.
You can also order eggs freshly prepared to your liking at a special station at the buffet.
The Crowne Plaza Hamburg doesn’t offer an extraordinary breakfast, but the spread is totally fine and totally sufficient for a good start into the day.
Sadly, there is neither a pool nor a sauna at the Crowne Plaza Hamburg City Center. The only recreation facility is a small gym located off reception. There are a few machines, including a strength machine for various training options.
While okay for a quick workout, I’d actually expect a somewhat bigger gym in a hotel of this size. The lack of views is somewhat sad, too.
My stay at the Crowne Plaza Hamburg City Center was good enough and I’d say that the value for the money at this property is quite good, especially considering the usually high prices in Hamburg. The rooms are neither big nor luxurious, but they do the trick and are comfortable. The Club Lounge is surprisingly nice, the breakfast is good and the gym is at least okay. All in all, a decent enough choice for a stay in Hamburg.
