Hotel Review: Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica
The Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica is one of the most prestigious properties in the whole Los Angeles Area. In this extensive hotel review, I’ll give you insights on whether the property is recommendable or not.
Santa Monica is one of the expensive areas in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, but it’s also one of the nicest. Not only are you right by the beach, but downtown isn’t too far away and there are lot’s of dining and shopping options around.

The Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica, member of The Leading Hotels of the World, is one of the most prestigeous hotels in town and I’d say that this is for a reason.
Deluxe Room at the Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica
Thanks to my Leaders Club Status, I was assigned a Deluxe Room as an upgrade at the Shutters on the Beach.
The centerpiece of the room obviously is the plush and very comfortable King Bed, which comes with a somewhat different design than at most other hotels.
Right next to the bed, there’s a working desk with a comfortable enough leather chair. What’s odd about this setup is that there’s only a night desk on one side of the bed as the working desk is located right by the other side.
Then opposite of the working desk, you can find a flat-screen television as well as the minibar and a coffee machine, which produced alright coffee.
The only other seating option than the working is a comfortable armchair located in the other corner of the room. While the room as such and the size of it didn’t amaze me, I thought that the “beach house” design was really nice. The room was way more cozy than what I’m used to by other hotels and the many widows with shades made the room feel very bright.
The views were somewhat limited, but you could at least see a stretch of the beach and ocean.
The bathroom of the Deluxe Room at the Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica was very nice, too. A big window, which can be completely closed, allows for daylight and the high quality interior makes you feel like you’re staying at a real luxury hotel.
There’s a single sink with enough storage, a spacious marble bathtub, which even comes with a rubber duck as a little gimmick.
Each separated from the actual bathroom by a door, there are a toilet and a shower with two shower heads, one of those a really nice rain shower head.
All in all, I thought that the room at the Shutters was really nice despite it not being all that spacious.
Breakfast at the Shutters on the Beach
Breakfast at the Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica is served in the hotel’s main restaurant or via in room dining. It’s offered á la carte, so it doesn’t matter where you are dining. However, prices are terribly high as you can see on what we got for 60 US-Dollar.
We had a 50 US-Dollar credit, but it really didn’t get us far. The granola with fruits as well as the pancakes were very good though.
The croissant was fresh and tasty, too.
While the quality of food at the Shutters is high without any doubt, I’d say that breakfast really is overpriced, most likely a function of the nice location.
Room Service at the Shutters on the Beach
As we felt lazy, we decided to order room service in the evening when staying at the Shutters on the Beach. Service was quick and friendly and the portion was a decent size.
The Club Sandwich we ordered was quite good, but not exceptional. For the price we paid it was definitely overpriced, but that aside there’s nothing bad to say about it.
Beach, Pool & Gym at the Shutters on the Beach
While there’s no such thing as a private beach in Santa Monica, the Shutters is located in the first row, what means that you just have to leave the hotel and you’ll be on the beach immediately.
It’s a really nice one, so whether it’s for swimming or sunbathing, you’ll enjoy it!
The pier isn’t far away from the Shutters either, but the hotel offers some facilities of its own, too. First of all, there’s a small swimming pool with a jacuzzi.
More importantly, there are dozens of loungers, which allow you to sunbath with a view (partly) of the beach and the sea.
Without any views, but quite nice anyways, is the hotel’s gym. It comes with various treadmills, bikes and more cardio options. There’s also a nice area for strength training with weights and a few machines.
While no full gym, it’s on a high level for a hotel and I’m sure you’ll be able to do a proper workout here, especially taking into account that all the equipment is modern and high quality.
Overall impressions of the Shutters on the Beach
My stay at the Shutters on the Beach Santa Monica was very enjoyable. The hotel offers very nicely designed and really luxurious rooms, a perfect location right by the beach, good service and tasty food. On the other hand, the prices for the rooms and basically everything else are incredibly high, which is somewhat of a downer. Yet, if that’s acceptable for you, the Shutters on the Beach is a really great option for spending the night in Santa Monica!
