The Metropol Palace Belgrade is a luxury hotel in the Serbian capital. In this extensive review, we’ll explain why staying here is a good experience despite the hotel not looking that great from the outside.
When I think of historic luxury hotels belonging to Marriott’s Luxury Collection, I’m having stunning buildings in mind. Well, the Metropol Palace isn’t a highlight from the outside.
That said, the property has been fully renovated and really is a different story from the inside, starting with a beautiful lobby, followed by a generally nice mix between historic and modern elements.
The location of the Metropol Palace Belgrade is decent. It’s not directly in the city center, but in a nice area and close to several sights and directly opposite of a tram station.
The Deluxe Room I was upgraded to (I booked through the Marriott STARS program) immediately left a good impression on me and very much felt like a Junior Suite.
The design is modern, but not overly though. This makes the room feel stylish, but yet comfortable. Interestingly, a sofa and armchair are located right at the foot of bed.
The centerpiece is a very comfortable bed with two nightstands, where I slept very well (sound insulation is quite good).
On the other side of the room, there’s a very long desk as well as a flat-screen television and a couple of shelves (a nice little design feature).
The working desk has a really good size and a fairly comfortable, but sadly not ergonomic chair.
On the desk, you can find a coffee machine, which is a great feature.
The view of the neighborhood is nothing to talk home about.
The bathroom can be entered from the middle of the room and comes with a sliding door.
I’d say it’s medium-sized with a small vanity, but enough storage space around.
The toilet is located in the middle of the room and doesn’t offer any additional privacy.
What’s nice though is the large walk-in shower with a good water pressure.
I really liked the room at the Metropol Palace Belgrade and would consider it to be above average for luxury hotels and definitely a bit more individual than the (also very nice) rooms at the Hilton Belgrade and the Radisson Collection Belgrade.
In the morning, you can enjoy breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant, either inside or on the terrace, if weather permits.
The breakfast spread is extensive and comes with a good selection of bakery goods, cold cuts, cheeses, fresh fruits, veggies, some fish and more.
You may also enjoy the selection of various hot dishes on the buffet, including all the Western classics.
In addition, omelettes and other egg dishes can be ordered and are prepared freshly.
Overall, breakfast at the Metropol Palace Belgrade is very much what I would have expected from a luxury hotel. It’s a good spread and decent quality, but not comparable to the massive breakfast spreads hotels in Asia, like the Conrad Tokyo or Conrad Singapore offer.
During my stay, I also had lunch at the Metropol Palace Belgrade with my colleagues. The restaurant of the property is fairly fancy, offering options like sole (which was really good).
While the dishes happened to be rather small, the quality of everything was exceptional, so the restaurant is definitely worth recommending, just be aware that prices are on the high side for Belgrade.
I also had room service in the evening, where I had a more classic dish. The Club Sandwich with fries was good enough, but not exceptional.
All in all, a good food experience, even for a luxury hotel.
In the basement, the Metropol Palace offers a very large recreation area. The gym is not only large, but also very well equipped.
There’s a lot of modern equipment for cardio training and the two times I visited, the area was quite empty, allowing for an enjoyable workout.
There are also a couple of strengh machines as well as different weights, a well rounded offering.
I’d say that the highlight is the very stylishly designed swimming pool though.
Not only does it look good, but it’s also a nice pool to do some laps as it’s very long and also doesn’t feel crowded if a couple of people go for a swim.
You can also enjoy one of the many loungers next to the pool or the jacuzzi.
Other features of this area include a sauna and steam bath as well as a recreation area, where you can find some small snacks.
If weather permits, you can even lounge outside with nice garden views – really nice!
While maybe not as amazing as at the Fontenay Hamburg, I really enjoyed the recreation facilities. For a city hotel, this is a great offering!
The only real weakness of the Metropol Palace Belgrade is the service, which was spotty from time to time. Other than that, there’s not a lot not to love about this property. The value for the money is exceptional, the rooms are nicely designed and the recreation facilities are great. I also enjoyed both, breakfast and dinner. Thus, I can just highly recommend staying here!
