The Dolder Grand Zurich is one of the most famous hotels in Switzerland. The monumental property was fully renovated a couple of years ago and now boosts all the luxury you may be looking for. In this review, we’ll explain what you can expect of staying here!
Zurich in particular and Switzerland in general aren’t cheap, especially not when it comes to luxury hotels. This might be one of the reasons, why the historic Dolder Grand Zurich was renovated for hundreds of millions of Swiss Francs, even though it is questionable whether the property will ever be able to earn that amount back.
Nevertheless, for guests this means that they can expect an amazing luxury hotel with great views of the city and the lake.
While connectivity in the city isn’t perfect, you can take a train down, which only takes a few minutes and a taxi ride to the city center is less than 15 minutes as well. Thus, you just get the best of both: A city property and a relaxed space in nature.
There are two different types of rooms at the Dolder Grand Zurich, modernized ones with a historic touch and totally modern ones in the Spa wing. I had one of the latter and really liked the modern design, which I much prefer to the design of properties like the Adlon Kempinski Berlin or the Park Hyatt Hamburg.
The Deluxe Room I occupied wasn’t crazy spacious, but comes with a really nice layout with the bed as the centerpiece of the room right in the middle. I also really enjoyed the color palette.
The comfortable bed comes with a wooden headboard and two night desks. Due to the location of the bed, you can enjoy the views of the scenery from bed. Curtains can be electronically controlled as well.
On the other side of the headboard, there’s a narrow walkway, which houses the wardrobe, where you can find lots of hangers and storage space.
Right by the window in one corner, a medium-sized work desk alongside an a comfortable chair invites you to get some work done.
On the other side, right next to bed, there are two further chairs alongside a smaller table.
As I was travelling with a dog, the hotel also cutely prepared some amenities.
Generally one of the highlights of the rooms at the Dolder Grand Zurich are the balconies, which are a bit tight, but really nice.
Not only are the views great, but you can also very much enjoy sitting here on one the chairs and either eat something or get some work done.
Other amenities in the room include a minibar (chargeable) and a Nespresso coffee maker, which you can use free of charge.
The bathroom is another area, where the Dolder Grand Zurich really shows off. Everything looks very high quality thanks to the usage of marble.
There’s a large double vanity with two sinks and plenty of storage space.
A free-standing bathtub invites you to enjoy some relaxation time while in the room.
This is complemented by an amazing walk-in shower with a rain shower head and perfect water pressure.
The toilet is also located in its own room, offering additional privacy.
Last but not least, it’s worth noting that a welcome gift was presented to me just minutes after arriving in the room.
Overall, there’s really nothing bad to say about the rooms at the Dolder Grand Zurich. The design is stunning, everything is thought through and the balconies and beautiful bathrooms complement a great room experience.
The breakfast experience at the Dolder Grand Zurich is quite lavish. There’s a large buffet in the restaurant, where you can find a lot of continental classics, including a great choice of bread rolls and bread.
There is also an amazing choice of yogurts, muesli as well as fresh fruits. Cheeses and cold cuts are also plentiful and of the highest quality.
After sitting down at a table, you are also asked for your preferred choice of drinks, including all kinds of coffees as well as freshly squeezed juices. You may also order various hot dishes from the kitchen, including the likes of eggs benedict, waffles and pancakes.
Both things I tried were wonderful and so was the service during breakfast, fully attentive and quick. It’s also very attractive you can also sit outside with views of Zurich – what a great place to start the day.
During my brief stay, I only had the chance to sample room service and not the restaurant. The burger I ordered was pretty nicely presented.
The quality and taste were also good, but the price for food at the Dolder is pretty high. The burger, for example, was 42 CHF. Yet, for enjoying it on your private balcony, I’d say it’s worth it!
The Dolder Grand Zurich is known for its unique recreation options, making it one of the most impressive spa city hotels. One of the main features is the beautiful indoor pool.
It’s amazing for swimming laps or even just enjoying some time in the water. Due to the floor-to-ceiling windows, this area is also well lit all day long.
There are plenty of loungers right by the pool, where you can relax before or after having a swim.
Especially during summer, there are more highlights though. My personal favorite is the spacious outdoor terrace, where you can lounge with views of Zurich and the lake.
Plus, there’s a great jacuzzi, where you can enjoy the same views.
If it’s a little colder or you just feel like relaxing indoors, there’s another spacious area, where you can relax in a unique way.
Aside from different lounging options with hot stones, there’s a really nice sauna.
Another highlight sure is the ice room, which is a feature I haven’t seen in any other hotel before.
In the really beautiful changing rooms, you can also find another spa area, separated by gender.
It’s at least as beautiful and offers more lounging, more saunas and more steam baths. Usually, you will end up having this area for yourself at most times – incredible.
If you are more looking for sports, there are various courses and personal training offered. The spacious gym with tons of modern equipment can also be used free of charge.
There is basically everything you need for a great cardio or strength training at the Dolder Grand Zurich, so it definitely is an amazing gym.
All these features make the Dolder Grand Zurich more of a holiday hotel than a city property and also makes it a great choice for a relaxation escape as it offers at least the same level of recreation as for the example the Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt or the Chedi Andermatt.
The Dolder Grand Zurich is an exceptional luxury hotel. The location might not be perfect for everyone, but other than that, there’s nothing to criticize. The rooms are truly amazing, the views are great and the spa is definitely one of a kind for a city hotel. Breakfast was superb as well, so I can just highly recommend staying here!
